For centuries, our neighbourhood was an unassuming agricultural area responsible for supplying London with fresh fruits and vegetables. This all changed following the Great Exhibition, which was held in nearby Hyde Park in 1851. This groundbreaking exhibition was the forerunner for the renowned arts and science institutions that now define this area. Today, you will find us within walking distance of some of London’s most prestigious cultural attractions, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the Royal Albert Hall.
Our pub was built in 1845 on part of the former site of Bute House. Built for the 1st Marquess of Bute in the early 19th century, this house earned Bute Street its name. We are now the street’s oldest surviving building. One of our pub’s more notable past owners was Sid Chaplin, brother of legendary comedian Charlie Chaplin, who bought it for him and their Mother.
Our pub sign is reminiscent of the Coat of Arms of the Shetland Islands, providing a clue to the origins of our unusual name. South Kensington was home to a large Danish population in the early 1900s, and the Danish once had sovereignty over the Shetlands, which were then known as the Zetlands.
Our ornate exterior gives way to a bright interior, which features a mahogany bar, etched mirrors and large windows. Enjoy our excellent selection of cask ales, including the 1730, our own flavourful pale ale. Our fine ales and wines pair perfectly with our menu of hearty pub food classics.
Fabulous Function Room with a Private Bar and Large Screen TVs
The upstairs room of our pub is known as the Chaplin Room, a reference to our famous former owner. Often used for dining when it’s not reserved for an event, this function room is ideal for private dinners. With space for up to 50 people, the Chaplin Room is also a wonderful choice for work parties, birthdays and weddings. Like our downstairs bar, the Chaplin Room has a number of large screen TVs which make it a popular setting for private viewings of sporting events. We can decorate the room to suit your event, or you are welcome to bring your own decorations to personalise the space. Our late license on Fridays and Saturdays allows for the option of extended celebrations, while a private bar and toilet facilities create extra privacy for you and your guests. Whatever the occasion we look forward to welcoming your function to the Zetland Arms.
A Cosy Pub in London’s Cultural Centre
South Kensington is one of London’s most picturesque and fascinating neighbourhoods, filled with outstanding museums, elegant terraced homes and charming green spaces. Danish roots and a large population of French expats lend a chic European element to the neighbourhood. Discover more than 3,000 years of art and design at the Victoria and Albert Museum, or spend an afternoon strolling through the glorious Kensington Gardens. Don’t miss the South Kensington Farmers Market on Saturdays, when Bute Street is closed to traffic to make way for stalls selling local produce. You will find us a three-minute walk from the South Kensington tube station, tucked away on a serene corner between the busy roads of the A4 Cromwell Road and the Fulham Road.
