Unique and Iconic London Inn on Fleet Street

Ye Olde Cock Tavern is a unique and fascinating pub located on bustling Fleet Street in the City of London. Originally dating back to 1549, the pub has the narrowest frontage of any London pub and is located opposite Temple Church, made famous by Dan Brown’s novel ‘The Da Vinci Code’.

The tavern, then known as The Cock Alehouse, was originally situated on the north side of Fleet Street and in its time was the preferred watering hole of many historic figures including Alfred Lord Tennyson, Charles Dickens and Doctor Johnson. In 1887, the pub moved to its current location to make room for a new branch of the Bank of England.

Many of its original features were carefully reconstructed, including the fireplace, its overmantle and the ornamental cockerel, which are believed to be the work of master carver, Grinling Gibbons. They can be viewed today on the first floor of the pub.

When you step inside Ye Olde Cock you’ll find a cosy and comfortable spot to enjoy the company of friends and family, as patrons have for almost 500 years. The interior is adorned with traditional timbered beams and dotted with vintage-style green and red leather sofas – a nod to the leather benches of the nearby Houses of Commons and Lords. The pub has a warm and friendly ambience, and a delicious menu of food and cask ales to chose from.

Explore the historic financial heart of London

The City of London is best known for finance, but there’s a fun and fascinating side to the culture, history and architecture of this area of the capital. Fleet Street is the historic home of press and publishing, with London’s first printing shop established in the around in 1500. The area is renowned for its numerous cafes and taverns where writers, politicians and intellectuals have gathered throughout the ages to debate and unwind.

St Paul’s Cathedral, with its iconic dome and awe-inspiring interior is a short walk from Ye Olde Cock, as are the Barbican (Europe’s largest arts centre) and the magnificent gothic Guildhall. Ye Olde Cock Tavern is situated in front of Temple Church, famously featured as a key location in the Da Vinci Code. The church, dating from late 12th century and built for the Knights Templar, is the finest of the four round churches still existing in England and well worth a visit. Temple tube station is a short walk south towards the banks of the Thames, making Ye Olde Cock Tavern an easy location to reach and a wonderful base for your celebration.
