A Dramatic Pub with Profound Character

The Watergates is a breathtaking underground pub on Watergate Street, beneath the historic heart of Chester. One of England’s oldest cities, Chester has both Ancient Roman and Anglo-Saxon foundations, but is famous for its magnificent medieval architecture. Our pub sits in the 12th century undercroft of The Old Crypt, which is the oldest building on Watergate Street and part of the unique Chester Rows; or simply, The Rows, as they’re known locally.

A series of distinctive medieval buildings, The Rows are celebrated for their idiosyncratic galleried walkways and exquisite, half-timbered facades. Today these wonderful buildings are home to many of Chester’s most exclusive shops. Which is fitting, as The Rows themselves are a legacy of the prosperous middle ages when Chester was North West England’s largest trading port.

The Watergates’ setting is one of only 20 remaining medieval undercrofts, or crypts, in the ancient city centre and is characterised by soaring, vaulted ceilings and extraordinary brickwork. To highlight the unique drama of the space, our pub is lit by theatrical, modern chandeliers and decorated in soothing, heritage tones. The bar is a large and imposing focal point in The Watergates, beautifully complemented by thoughtful seating, welcoming banquettes and a series of intriguing side rooms. Once used as wine cellars, these rooms create a delightful sense of privacy, especially when our popular pub is at its busiest. The design of The Watergates is a contemporary slant on our building’s 12th century origins with welcome 21st century details, including live sport on big screen TVs and an extensive selection of interesting and unusual drinks.

Function Rooms with Charming Heritage and Modern Attitude

The Barrel Room is The Watergates’ main function room and incorporates the distinctive style of our pub on a more intimate scale. Unusually shaped and softly lit, the room is a warm and atmospheric setting for celebrations, small parties, formal and informal dinners and special occasions. With space for up to 40 guests, The Barrel Room is also ideal for drinks or dinner after a day at Chester Racecourse.

Forming a lovely counterpoint to our underground pub, The Watergates’ roof terrace can also be booked for functions. It’s a fresh, airy space with room for up to 50 guests and has both its own private bar and big screen TV, making it an ideal venue for an informal event. Especially pretty during the summer months, our roof terrace is also heated, so equally inviting on cooler days and in the evening.

A Unique Pub Under Chester’s Enchanting City Centre

The Watergates is part of The Rows, a uniquely privileged position and an excellent location for enjoying Chester’s fascinating past and lively present. Watergate Street is famous for exquisite specialist shops tucked into stunning medieval buildings, yet is only a short distance from the city’s modern shopping districts and legendary Chester Racecourse. Chester Cathedral, surrounded by pretty streets and close to the River Dee, is three minutes from our pub and Chester Station is within easy walking distance. So, when you join us for a drink in The Watergates you experience the best qualities of Chester in one of the city’s best locations.
