Celebrate at a Charming Westminster Pub

In a quiet cul-de-sac between St James’ Park and Parliament Square, you’ll find The Two Chairmen. Thought to be the oldest pub business in Westminster, this handsome pub with a unique olde worlde charm has been offering delicious food, cask ales and and a warm welcome to guests since at least 1729. Located opposite the Grade II listed Cockpit Steps from Birdcage Walk, where James I once kept aviaries for exotic birds, The Two Chairmen was one of a number of inns and coaching yards established to cater for the coach traffic from the west.

The pub’s unusual name comes from the men who used to carry sedan chairs for the wealthy people of London during the 18th century. The sedan chair custom was originally brought to England in the 17th century and gained popularity with the well-heeled, who didn’t want to walk in the muddy, busy streets of the capital.

Opposite The Two Chairmen stood an early London theatre and cock-fighting arena, The Royal Cockpit, where the upper classes could wager on the fights. There was a sedan chair stand outside where patrons could hire chairs to take them home. While waiting for their next fare, chairmen used to relax in the pub, and the name stuck. When wanting to attract the attention of a chairman, it was usual to call ‘Chair ho!’, which is believed to be where the word ‘Cheerio!’ came from. Above the bar in the Two Chairmen, you can see the original 18th century artwork depicting two men carrying a sedan chair.

Today the area around The Two Chairmen consists of attractive Georgian townhouses, quiet mews and quaint alleys evoking the feel of an earlier age. Blue plaques abound, commemorating some of the distinguished statesmen, lords and admirals to have lived in these influential streets at the heart of Westminster. Although rebuilt in the mid 18th century, the pub still retains many of its original features, including oak beams, ornate fireplaces and a delightful mural on the back wall. You’ll also find tasteful chandeliers, dark wood panelling and plush leather furniture so you can relax in comfort.
