Perched on the corner of Westbourne Grove and Queensway, The Redan is in the heart of the area of West London historically known as Westbournia. The neighbourhood flourished in the mid 19th century, thanks to the development of the Metropolitan Railway. The opening of new transportation links kicked off a building boom with the creation of grand houses, picturesque squares and the high street where The Redan now stands.
Next door to The Redan, you’ll find the famous Whiteley’s department store. In 1863, a young entrepreneur from Yorkshire called William Whiteley saw an opportunity to open a fancy goods shop to capitalise on the passing trade brought by the new train links. By 1876, he had acquired 15 adjacent shops, and had created London’s first department store. This great emporium claimed to be a ‘universal provider’ to that sold everything from gloves to building goods – you could even arrange the hire of an elephant if required. In its heyday, Whiteley’s employed 6,000 people. By 1879, Westbourne Grove was one of the capital’s most successful commercial centres with the carriage classes travelling from the centre of London to shop in ‘the Bond Street of the west’.
The Redan has a proud Victorian history and has retained many of its original features, including our ornate black and gold signage. The unique name and pub sign commemorates the Battle of the Great Redan, one of the major conflicts of the Crimean War fought in 1855, just a year before The Redan opened. Inside, the interior is unpretentious with dark wood panelling and classic Victorian tiles that create a cosy and welcoming atmosphere that all can enjoy.
