A relaxed pub in the heart of the City

A cosy and relaxed pub situated in the beating heart of London’s financial district, the Kings Arms has a history that stretches back almost 250 years. Throughout that time, we have welcome guests through our doors to enjoy our delicious food, fine ale and pleasant ambience.

Originally built in 1769 and situated on Bishopsgate Court, The King’s Arms has seen the City of London evolve and change around it. Wormwood Street, where The Kings Arms is located, follows the line of the original Wall of London, built around 180AD by the Romans to defend their strategic commercial centre, roughly defining the boundaries of the City of London as it stands today. One of the eight Roman gates to the city was Bishopsgate, which connected the centre of Londinium by road to Spitalfields then on to the city of Cambridge.

The gate was rebuilt in the 15th century by Hanse merchants in return for trade privileges from Edward II, and featured two ornate statues of bishops. Sadly demolished in 1790, a bishop’s mitre can be seen on the building next to the entrance to Bishopsgate Churchyard gardens, marking the spot where the ancient gate once stood.

Behind The King’s Arms lies the church of St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate and its pretty gardens. Named in honour of the patron saint of travellers, the Grade II listed church is first mentioned in 1212, and survived both the Great Fire of London and the Blitz. On its grounds there is kiosk from the underground Victorian Turkish baths, a delightfully unusual building that is a marked contrast to the glass and metal skyscrapers that surround it. Opened in 1895, The New Broad Street Turkish Baths were praised by contemporary architects for their design and quality. Bathers entered the baths via a colourful Moorish-styled kiosk with an onion shaped cupola decorated with a star and crescent, leading to a tin-glazed winding staircase.

With its simple but timeless pub décor and attractive beer garden, The Kings Arms is welcome escape from the City’s fast-paced, frenetic financial centre. We are in a prime location opposite the Heron Tower, the tallest building in the City of London at 230 metres high, on the corner of Bishopsgate. At The Kings Arms, we welcome a varied clientele of city workers, tourists and visitors, attracted by our delicious British pub food, cask ales and warm hospitality.

A fascinating location in London’s financial district

Just behind The Kings Arms is Finsbury Circus Gardens. Dating back to 1606, it is London’s oldest public park and the largest open space in the City, complete with bandstand. The pretty gardens are filled with London plane trees, some over 200 years old, surrounded by magnificent curved Victorian terraces of white Portland stone. In addition to the ever-popular attractions of St Paul’s Cathedral and the Barbican Centre, there are many hidden gems to be found in this area. St Helen’s church is one of these. Often referred to as the Westminster Abbey of the City, the Grade I listed building dates back to the 12th century and contains more monuments than any other church in the City after the Abbey. It is situated a short stroll from the pub and is well worth a visit. It also has the claim to fame of being the parish of William Shakespeare when he lived in the City during the 1590s.

The King’s Arms is well served by public transport being close to both Liverpool Street and Moorgate stations, making us the ideal location in which to relax with friends and family or celebrate a special occasions.
