The exterior of this Grade II-listed building looks much like it would have when it first opened its doors to weary stagecoach travellers. The original coach entrance is still intact and an eye-catching life-size statue of a stag – the white hart for which the pub is named – stands atop the columned porch. Inside, the bright and airy open-plan pub has been subject to a tasteful modern refurbishment, which has brought it into the 21st century without stripping it of its historical character. Comfy seating and large TV screens that are used to show big live sporting events are unobtrusively placed around the bar, blending in surprisingly well with the centuries-old wood panelling and original fireplaces.
In the town of Buckingham, evidence of the past is omnipresent. Just a few steps from the pub is the oldest building in the area, the Buckingham Chantry Chapel, which dates back to the 15th century. Most of Buckingham’s historic buildings are Georgian in style and were constructed in the 18th century as part of a rebuild following a devastating fire that swept through the town back in 1725. Just a minute’s walk from the White Hart stands the town’s 18th-century castle-like Gothic gaol, which now functions as a museum.
Visitors hoping to get a sense of the Buckingham of old will enjoy the ambiance of this long-standing drinking hole, which still holds an air of bygone times. It’s not hard to imagine the sound of horses’ hooves clip-clopping on the streets outside while sipping a drink here.
Stylish Indoor and Outdoor Function Space
Though the White Hart doesn’t have a closed-off function space, it does have an area at the rear of the pub that can be cordoned off for special events. Separated from the main space by a small set of stairs, this area has its own dedicated bar so your guests won’t have to queue for drinks. Also of interest, particularly for those planning a summer party, is the outdoor patio, which can be reserved for private events.
A Character-Filled Coaching Inn with Modern Comfort
The White Hart benefits from a fabulous location right in the centre of Buckingham and blends old-world charm with modern comfort and convenience. Just like in the stagecoach era, all who arrive here are made to feel welcome, whether they are visiting workers, local families or even furry four-legged friends (yes, this is a dog-friendly pub). And for those coming by car rather than stagecoach, there is free parking to be found round the back.
