A Traditional, Grade II-Listed Pub in Guildford

The Stoke pub is set in a traditional Gothic building that has been tastefully decorated in contemporary style, with wood panelling, neutral blue and white walls, a wooden horseshoe-shaped bar and a scattering of chalkboards listing the latest food and drink offerings; it even has its own wood-fired pizza oven! The building was originally erected in 1840 under the name the Lodge and was licensed as the Stoke Hotel in 1870, taking its name from the road upon which it stands. Today, Stoke Road is one of the main trunk roads into central Guildford.

Though the pub has been recently renovated, original features have been expertly preserved throughout, including the attractive bell-shaped windows and doors and – ideal for chilly winter evenings – a coal burning fireplace. There are seven large screen TVs throughout the pub showing the best in live sport, and a popular regular comedy night called ‘You must be Stoking’, which attracts local students and business people, as well as first-time guests. There is a large beer garden to the rear of the pub and a car park nearby.

However you like to spend your nights, the Stoke has somewhere comfortable where you can sit and escape from the outside world. Laze on heavy leather armchairs, perch with friends on tall barstools, or challenge your other half to a game or two in the self-enclosed pool table area.

Self-enclosed Function Room with a Stage and Dancefloor

The Stoke has a self-enclosed function room with its own entrance, toilets and private bar. The large room, which can hold 120 seated or 180 standing guests, has a DJ system as well as a wooden stage and dancefloor area. Like the main bar, the function room has recently been refurbished and has the same contemporary-meets-traditional feel. The room is perfectly suited to weddings, christenings and birthday parties, but also has a projector and big screen for meetings and presentations. The function room has its own bar which can be staffed by dedicated bartenders who focus solely on your party, so your guests need never enter the main bar area to get a drink.

A Contemporary Pub in a Historic Location

Directly behind the pub is Guildford’s largest park, Stoke Park. This Green Flag Award-winning space features a children’s playground and a skate park, and is also home to Guildford College. The pub is also just a short distance from the bustling central shopping district in Guildford. Located at the southern end of Stoke Road, the main shopping area encompasses no less than five theatres as well as the historic High Street and the Guildford School of Acting.

Guildford is only a 40-minute train journey away from London’s Waterloo station and is close to the M25 motorway. Regulars, new guests and dogs are all welcomed at this modern-meets-traditional pub. We have a private function room that can be hired for all kinds of events and a beer garden for when the sun peeks out. The Stoke is just a 0.7-mile walk from Guildford train station along Stoke Road and the A320.
