A Handsome, Grade II-Listed Pub in New Malden

This Grade II-listed pub in the residential suburb of New Malden is just as lovely today as it was when it first opened as a hotel-cum-pub in the late 1880s. Beneath its high ceilings is a light-filled space where original features, including stained-glass windows, wood panelling and two functioning fireplaces up the charm factor. A horseshoe-shaped bar, quiet nooks and comfy seating – ranging from made-for-sharing benches to snug armchairs – make it an enviable setting for a pint. On sunny days, the pub’s large, enclosed beer garden quickly fills.

Three large TV screens downstairs occasionally show sport, but the vast majority of the guests who frequent the Royal Oak are there for a drink and a chat rather than to cheer on their favourite team. During weekdays at lunch, the pub is the preserve of socialising locals and office workers. Come evening, the commuter brigade often stop off here for a quick post-work pint after piling off the train from central London. Families make up the majority at the weekends.

First established with the arrival of the railway in the latter half of the 19th century, New Malden is now a thriving suburb. The area is home to a sizeable Korean population, whose arrival can be traced back to a time when the South Korean embassy was located here. The UK headquarters for Korean electronics giant, Samsung, was also located here up until 2005. New Malden’s high street is dotted with Korean restaurants, grocery stores and shops, which inject some multicultural flavour to this suburb.

Spacious, Light-Filled Function Room

The pub’s function room, which can hold up to 100 people seated and up to 150 standing, is located upstairs. Cut off from the main ground-floor area, the Luke Pullen Suite as it is known, is accessed via a heavy timber staircase. It’s got an eye-catching curved ceiling, a light-yielding bay window and circular porthole-style windows at either end as well as another fireplace. A side room leading off to the right of the function room has its own private bar and makes a good spot to set out a buffet table for catered functions.

This flexible space can be tweaked to suit all manner of events. A big projector screen can be used for business presentations or to show live sport. You can even arrange for table service, so no one need miss an all-important match moment while getting in a round. A dancefloor and PA system can be rigged up for weddings, birthdays and anniversary parties, and catering can also be arranged. Should you want to put your own stamp on your event, you can even decorate the room as you see fit. Dab hands in the kitchen are also welcome to self-cater.

Laid-Back Victorian Charm within Easy Access of London

A laid-back hideaway with a neighbourhood feel, this attractive 19th-century pub in a south-west suburb of London is made for socialising with friends and family. Designated drivers can leave their vehicles in the pub’s car park. The pub is just a five-minute walk from New Malden station, which is, in turn, just 20 or so minutes from Waterloo by train, making the Royal Oak easily accessible for London-dwellers too.
