Magnificent Pub in Prestigious Mayfair

The Marlborough Head first opened its doors to thirsty Londoners in 1758, during the reign of King George II. For the last 250 years, we’ve been providing our guests with a warm, welcoming atmosphere in which to enjoy traditional pub food and good company.

Located in Mayfair, just off Oxford Street, the Marlborough Head is a handsome late Victorian pub, built from terracotta brick with ornate original carvings. It takes its name from John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, an English statesman and soldier considered one of Britain’s greatest military commanders. Today Mayfair is London’s most exclusive area and home to the City’s elite, but in the Duke’s time, the area surrounding the pub had an altogether darker and more sinister role.

The Marlborough Head is located close to the ancient site of Tyburn gallows, which hosted public executions of London’s criminals and traitors from the 11th to the late 18th century. Public executions were a very popular spectacle in ancient London, with people coming from far and wide to watch the condemned “dancing the Tyburn jig”. The last recorded execution there was a highwayman by the name of John Austin in 1783.

However, in the late Victorian period, the Duke of Westminster took control of the redesign and redevelopment of what was by then Mayfair’s high street to provide accommodation and amenities befitting of the City’s upper classes. The present day Marlborough Head was built in 1892 to designs created by Thomas Verity, the famous London theatre architect responsible for the Criterion theatre and the Pavillion at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
