The Lonsdale Hotel, or just ‘the Lonny’ as it’s known locally, is a community pub at heart. Not only is it the sponsor of Lonsdale Football Club, but it also has links with the local rugby team. Sport is a big part of the pub’s appeal and it’s a magnet for fans of both football and rugby when big matches are on TV. There are several large screens on both floors, which show all the live sports events broadcast on BT and Sky Sports. But it’s not only sports fans that are catered to here. A packed social calendar, featuring poker games, quiz nights and live music events, draws in a varied crowd.
Located right next door to a stop on the Tyne and Wear Metro, the Lonsdale is also frequented by commuters who drop in for a post-work pint. Just a few miles away from Newcastle University, the pub and indeed the wider West Jesmond area are favourites with students, who make use of the metro and the good walking and cycling routes in and out of the city.
Mezzanine Bar with Big Screens Available For Private Parties
Above the main bar area is a large, wood-panelled mezzanine that can be hired for parties and private events. This charming space can accommodate 60 seated guests or up to 100 standing. The mezzanine has its own bar with TVs, as well as a separate section with two pool tables, and above them, two more large TV screens. It’s a particularly good spot to book out for big live sports events and is always popular on race days at Newcastle Racecourse in Gosforth Park.
A Lively Pub with a Cosmopolitan Crowd
Jesmond is a chic suburb of Newcastle full of conservation areas and leafy avenues lined with Victorian and Edwardian houses, lending it a laid-back village feel. Just 15 minutes from the Lonsdale lies the beautiful and tranquil Jesmond Dene park. Local legend has it that an apparition of the Virgin Mary appeared here in medieval times and led to it becoming known as the Hill of Jesus, or Jesmond.
The area has proud sporting credentials, being one of only two-dozen places in England to have a real tennis club. And just up the road from our pub, on Osbourne Avenue, is Newcastle Cricket Club, the home venue for Northumberland County. Jesmond draws a crowd of commuting city workers as well as a student population from nearby universities, both of whom come to our bar to enjoy the lively and amiable atmosphere. Just a three-minute stroll from West Jesmond Metro station, the Lonsdale is a breeze to get to.
