A Handsome Victorian Pub in Carlisle

The Griffin is a large and lovely pub located right at the heart of Carlisle, just next door to the city’s listed railway station. Occupying a huge Victorian building, the pub spreads across two floors and during summer, the fun spills out onto the street, when the pavement outside is lined with tables for guests to enjoy the buzz of our historical neighbourhood, Botchergate.

A recent refurbishment has breathed new life into this grand listed building, with a careful restoration of many of its original features keeping its charm intact. It was first converted into a pub in 1999, but traces of its former life as Cumberland Union Bank can be found in the high ceilings, wooden panelling and striking wooden staircase. It also has big windows with gold etching that overlook Court Square and allow light to pour into the pub.

Together with our neighbours – the railway station and the hotel next door – we make up a trio of historic, listed buildings. The hotel was built especially for a visit by Queen Victoria, who stayed the night in 1853 on her way to Balmoral.

During the week, the vibe here is relaxed with a happy hubbub of chatter adding to the warm and welcoming atmosphere, while things step up a gear on the weekends. We’re a favourite with sports fans thanks to our big screens, which show live matches on both floors of the pub. And being next to the station, which has hourly trains to major cities like Edinburgh and London, we’re popular with the commuter crowd and with tourists arriving to explore our historic city.

Lovely Mezzanine Bar for Private Functions

The Griffin’s charm continues as you climb the wooden staircase and step into the mezzanine area upstairs. It has all the same features of the ground floor, including TVs and a big screen, its own bar and wooden tables with leather-topped benches. The only difference is that parts of this cosy upper floor can be sectioned off and used for private parties and celebrations.

The larger side of the mezzanine, which can seat 46 guests and hold a further 15 standing, is well-suited to the likes of birthdays, big family get-togethers and work functions. Or, for smaller and more relaxed gatherings, the other side of the bar can be booked for 25 seated guests plus 10 standing.

A Cosy Pub Surrounded by History

Carlisle is a historic place where shadows of the past can be found alongside modern shopping, stylish restaurants and wine bars. This is a city that has always been in high demand. It was founded by the Romans but taken by the Celts, then the Vikings and later the Saxons. Its location made it strategically valuable throughout the ages and it passed hands from the Scots to the English many times. One of our city’s greatest must-sees, the grand Carlisle Castle, has been besieged more times than any other place in the British Isles. Of all Carlisle’s pubs, the Griffin is one of the most special, with its historic character providing insight into the city’s past.

You’ll find our pub right at the heart of the city, just a minute’s walk from the Carlisle Citadel train station.Carlisle is a historic place where shadows of the past can be found alongside modern shopping, stylish restaurants and wine bars.
