You’ll find the main entrance to the pub on the Cross, a quaint street in the heart of the village. With its whitewashed walls and tall Georgian windows, the Golden Fleece feels right at home in this historical neighbourhood. The pub’s neighbours include lovely independent boutiques housed in period buildings and a Grade I-listed sandstone cross that sits atop ancient steps. The front doors of the pub are just opposite this important monument.
Inside, the pub is split into small, cosy rooms with low ceilings and lots of exposed brickwork. There are several TVs and a large screen all showing the big matches on BT and Sky Sports. Outside, you’ll find what is probably the best pub garden in town. This secluded, neatly landscaped area has contemporary garden furniture, bar stools overlooking the canal and an ice cream bar. It can be accessed from steps at the back of the pub or directly via the canal path.
Looking around our picturesque pub today, you wouldn’t guess that it actually started life as the village prison. Dating back at least to 1842 and possibly earlier still, the pub is rumoured to have secret underground prison tunnels – now filled in – connecting the cellars to other parts of the village.
A Choice of Indoor and Outdoor Function Spaces
Part of the pub’s cellar has been converted into a cosy function space called the Boot Room, which can be hired for private parties. It has its own bar and toilets and is accessed via a separate entrance at the side of the building, creating extra privacy for you and your guests. There is only one step down into the room, so it’s ideal if you require disabled access. Wooden floors, low ceilings and a gallery wall filled with pictures of Old Lymm all add to the cosy atmosphere of the Boot Room. And contrary to what you might expect from a former cellar, it has plenty of natural light.
With a capacity for 50 people, this is a popular venue for birthday celebrations and family get-togethers, but also for meetings, quizzes and charity events. Groups keen to hire the room to watch big sports matches are well catered for, as there is a TV here too. Our fabulous pub garden is also available to hire for private events.
A Traditional Pub in a Historical Neighbourhood
At the heart of a huge network of pretty canal paths in the historical village of Lymm, the Golden Fleece is perfectly positioned for walkers, cyclists and boaters seeking a drink in tranquil surroundings. We’re a firm favourite with dog walkers too and even have an outdoor dog bar so that our canine guests don’t feel left out. Whether you are passing by on foot, water or bicycle, we invite you to find a cosy corner inside or a relaxing spot in our garden and join us for a drink or bite to eat.
