Even when there is no sport showing on the screens, there is little danger of getting bored. A dartboard, a poker table and a pool table provide ample entertainment. The pub wraps around the corner of the busy High Street and Malden Road, facing a bustling roundabout, in the middle of which stands a fountain. Though the pub was named after a fountain on this roundabout, it’s not the one that is there today, but rather an earlier incarnation.
For more low-key entertainment, pick a seat near the street-facing windows to watch the action outside or if the weather allows, retreat to the roomy beer garden out back and sip a pint under the sun. As you make your way from the bar to the beer garden, you’ll likely be distracted by the room’s pièce de résistance, a stunning glass-domed ceiling adorned with ornate carvings and stained-glass etchings. Some guests come to the pub purely to gawp at the dome. Other unsuspecting drinkers simply happen upon it and are stopped dead in their tracks at the unexpectedly splendid sight.
A Function Room for Day or Night
Upstairs, you’ll find the Fountain’s 100-capacity function room, a high-ceilinged, rectangular-shaped space with a carpeted floor and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the roundabout out front. During the day, light pours in through the windows, making it a bright and pleasant space for business meetings and training sessions. A projector and drop-down screen are available to aid with presentations.
By night, it can be transformed into a party-ready space perfect for everything from work dos and birthday celebrations to weddings. If you want to include food for your guests, a buffet can be laid-out in the adjacent ante-room space. A dedicated bar and toilets located on the landing just outside the function room ensure that your guests are afforded privacy. Though not exclusive to function room guests, the smoking terrace, which can be entered via the adjacent ante-chamber, is easily accessible.
A Classic British Boozer
Round up a few friends for a pint in this casual pub, which boasts striking, historic features, traditional pub games and lots of large screens for sports fans. During the day, local workers and shoppers come here for a quick hiatus, while come evening, a loyal after-work crowd pour in off the train from New Malden station, which is less than 10 minutes’ walk away. Drivers will find pay-and-display parking available in the small lot at the side of the pub. There is often a flower-seller hawking fresh blooms out front too should you need to pick up a last-minute gift. New Malden station is just a 20-minute journey from London’s Waterloo.
