The Bay Horse, or simply ‘the Horse’ as it’s known by locals, has been a fixture in the hilltop town of Whickham for well over a century now. The pub was built in the middle of the 1800s, when Whickham was just a sleepy village. It stayed on the same site, with the same name, even as the area around it transformed into a town during the 1950s and ‘60s. In fact, the Horse has become such a dependable institution in the town centre that even significant flood damage in 2012 couldn’t keep its doors closed to the public for long.
In green, picturesque Whickham, you can experience a taste of rural life in the surrounding hills and fields, while still being well-connected to the vibrant city of Newcastle. The cityscape of the former industrial powerhouse can be seen spread out in the distance from the elevated vantage point of the town. Families visiting Whickham will enjoy the nearby Beamish Open Air Museum, which recreates life in the region as it would have been during the early 1900s.
Whickham’s cheery locals come to the Bay Horse regularly, often after commuting to Newcastle’s city centre or having spent the day at work in one of the town’s own businesses. Many come to enjoy the live entertainment on the weekend or to watch sport. With multiple screens thoughtfully placed throughout the open-plan interior, guests can enjoy clear views of the action. At weekends, the pub becomes a rendezvous point for party-goers, who start their nights in the Horse before heading into ‘the Toon’.

The city of Newcastle, which is packed with sights and attractions, is connected to Whickham by buses, which leave from near the station.
