Strikingly Designed Pub in the Thriving Retail Centre of London

Turn away from the restless spending hub on Oxford Street down a small sideroad to find the Spread Eagle, a pub with an unassuming exterior that transforms when you step inside. Once indoors, you will be greeted with a traditional offbeat interior where checkerboard flooring runs around the bar area beneath ceilings of deep red. A collage of pictures decorates the wall and stairs lead up to a quiet, private space that feels a world away from the shopping mania around the corner.

Our address used to be listed Oxford Street itself, having been established there since the late 18th century when the area was predominantly residential. But a mysterious name change the following century saw our pub change from the White Horse to the Spread Eagle, as the street’s priority changed from housing to shopping. After severe bombing of the area during World War II, most of the buildings on Oxford Street were rebuilt, including the Spread Eagle in 1955 when it was given its new address on Woodstock Street.

The Spread Eagle is sandwiched between some of the most popular areas of London. South of the pub is Mayfair, a famously classy collection of luxury hotels and high end shops. Directly to the north, of course, is Oxford Street, the busiest shopping street in Europe where locals and visitors alike flock to its hundreds of shops. Since retail became the predominant industry on Oxford Street, most of the pubs disappeared, making the Spread Eagle a refreshing stop in the area.

Our enviable location means that we get a wide variety of guests coming through the doors. Sport fans, of which there are millions in London, make the most of our large screens that show the latest football, rugby, tennis and cricket. We’re also popular with local workers, who stop by to enjoy our range of ales and chat to our friendly staff. On sunny days, our outdoor seating on a quiet side street is popular with people seeking a refreshing drink in the summer warmth and to rest their aching feet.

Relax in a Private Function Room

The upstairs room in the Spread Eagle can be booked out for functions of any kind, suitable for groups of up to 24 seated and 30 standing. Comfy seating, a private bar and a fireplace lend the room a sense of exclusivity, cut off from the rest of the pub and the busy nature of the surrounding area. Book this quiet space for formal dining, quiz nights or celebrations with colleagues and friends. Whatever the occasion we look forward to welcoming your function to the Spread Eagle.

Unwind from Daily Life in a Perfectly Placed Pub
