A 19th Century, Mock-Tudor Style Pub in Lytham St Annes

The Ship in Mortlake appears on television every year, as rowing fans pour out of its doors to watch the conclusion of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. The perennially popular sporting event packs out the pub, but the Ship’s stunning setting overlooking the Thames ensures it brings in the crowds throughout the year. Over two centuries of history cement the building’s appeal as one of the most charming pubs on the banks of London’s famous river.

The distinctive two-toned façade of the Ship is instantly recognisable; its blue and white exterior makes it look almost castle-like. A pub has been on this site in the historic suburb of Mortlake since 1781, when our earliest customers were the people working on the Thames barges, which moored right next to the pub. Today, the river still plays a vital role for us, as walkers and cyclists following the Thames Path will stop by for some much-needed refreshment.

The Boat Race, a rowing competition between the two oldest universities in the UK, has been held on this stretch of the Thames by Mortlake since 1839. The thrilling rivalry reaches its dramatic climax in front of the University stone, which is on the river bank directly opposite the Ship. Aside from the Boat Race, we’re a great destination for sports fans year round, as our generous selection of screens – including one outside for summer days – show rugby, tennis, Premier League football and more.

In summer, take a seat on our large outdoor patio looking out over the Thames. A barbecue area and extensive seating (complete with garden parasol heaters, just in case) make it the perfect spot to enjoy the long days and mild evenings of the British summertime. Or visit us in winter for the cosy welcome of our open fires, atmospheric wooden-beamed interior and menu of British pub classics.

Choose Between Indoor and Outdoor Function Areas

Pick the Ship for the ideal venue to celebrate Christenings, retirements and everything in between. Our raised conservatory area can be booked out for groups of up to 40 people to enjoy food, drink and sports. You can also hire our outdoor seating area and barbecue, offering unrivalled views of the Thames and seating for up to 60 people, with room for 100 standing. Host a summer charity event or work party here, as we have plenty of space for live bands and DJs too. Whatever the occasion we look forward to welcoming your function to the Ship.
