Shepherds Tavern was built in 1735 as part of the redevelopment of the neighbourhood by prominent architect Edward Shepherd, who was a local resident. His vision was to create a village square with quaint narrow alleyways, Georgian townhouses, boutique shops, a market and a Theatre. Our building began life as a butter shop before later being converted into a pub. Actress Wendy Richard MBE, who played Pauline Fowler on the show EastEnders, lived in the building between 1948 and 1953. You will see a plaque commemorating Richard on one of our pub’s exterior walls, unveiled by the cast of EastEnders after her death in 2009. Among our pub’s other claims to fame is an appearance in the 1950 Alfred Hitchcock film Stagefright.
Enjoy hearty pub food classics in our welcoming, lively interior. Expect the atmosphere to be particularly buzzing at lunchtime and in the evening, when Shepherds Tavern is a popular spot for local office workers to gather. We have Sky Sports and several large screen TVs for you to enjoy exciting live sport. A refurbishment in October 2015 revitalised our décor, while maintaining our warm, traditional ambiance.
