There has been a Rose & Crown in Stratford-upon-Avon since 1596. The original inn stood at 1 Sheep Street and for almost 300 years was a prominent town hostelry with a fine, well-documented reputation. When this original Rose & Crown finally closed in 1858, our pub adopted both the historic name and its legacy of wonderful hospitality.
The Rose & Crown’s building is characteristically Tudor and our half-timbered façade, leaded windows and crisp paintwork echo Sheep Street’s beautifully-preserved architectural heritage. Considered to be one of town’s prettiest thoroughfares, Sheep Street is trimmed with historic buildings, museums and elegant, specialist shops. It’s also a direct route to the River Avon, where views over the water on a summer afternoon pleasantly balance busy Stratford-upon-Avon’s crowds.
Even today, our pub respects the best qualities of a fine 16th century inn. Cosy fires in winter, comfortable seating and a welcoming atmosphere are all traditions to which we adhere. TV screens are thoughtfully arranged for guests to enjoy live sport. But our large pub also offers private nooks for quiet conversation and more than enough space for families to relax in peace. In better weather, our pretty beer garden is a tranquil respite from the bustle of Sheep Street and a perfect place to linger over a drink with friends on a warm evening.
An Inviting Function Room with Outdoor Options
The Rose & Crown function room is a delightful setting for family parties and celebrations, pre-theatre drink receptions, tour group lunches and private events. Sitting discreetly apart from our pub, it’s an inviting space which can be arranged for formal dinners of up to 150 guests, while working equally well for smaller, informal occasions.
Our pretty covered terrace is an ideal choice for events in warmer months, even when the weather is typically British. For larger outdoor events, The Rose & Crown beer garden can be booked in its entirety and is charming by day or night.
A Relaxed Pub in the Heart of Dramatic Stratford-upon-Avon
The Rose & Crown sits on one of Stratford-upon-Avon’s most important streets, right in the heart of the famous market town and close to the lovely River Avon itself. It’s an historic pub with a strong sense of heritage and some wonderful old connections The legendary Royal Shakespeare Theatre is five minutes’ walk away on the banks of the Avon. New Place, Shakespeare’s final family home, sits on Chapel Lane which runs parallel to Sheep Street. The playwright’s birthplace at Henley Street is only a short distance from our pub, while Anne Hathaway’s Cottage is just a 30-minute walk. We’re also well placed for public transport, with buses (and boats) leaving from around the corner. So whether it’s a snowy winter or a busy summer, come to the Rose & Crown for a relaxed haven at the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon’s delightful drama.
