Moorgate was named for its former medieval gate, which once led out to the marshy Moorfields found north of the city wall. The Moorfields remained one of the last pieces of open land in the city until the late 18th century, when it was developed into an area known today as Finsbury Circus. Up until 1994, our pub technically sat just outside the boundary to the City of London, which used to run along Eldon Street.
Our pub was built in 1887 and its name, The Red Lion, is one of the most common for pubs in England. There are over 600 other pubs named ‘The Red Lion’ across the country. The name can be traced back to the Duke of Lancaster, John of Gaunt, whose heraldic emblem was a red lion. John was one of the most powerful men in the country in the 14th century, and many pub owners named their establishments after his emblem to demonstrate their loyalty.
Inside our pub, big picture windows and warm wooden flooring create a bright, inviting ambiance. A favourite of locals who work in the nearby office buildings, the Red Lion is particularly buzzing during lunch hour and early evening. Enjoy live sport on one of our large screen TVs, or find a spot on one of the stools lining our windows and watch the passers-by on busy Eldon Street.
HANDSOME FUNCTION ROOM WITH A PRIVATE BAR AND ENTRANCE
An original 19th century staircase leads up to our charming function room. With room for up to 50 people, this space is ideal for private dining. Its two big screen TVs make it a popular choice for private viewings of live sports, while it can also be adapted to suit birthday parties and work events. Like the downstairs bar, our function room features attractive picture windows along with other distinctive historic features. The function room has a separate entrance from our main pub, as well as its own bar and toilets, ensuring privacy for your special event. Whatever the occasion, we look forward to welcoming your function to the Red Lion.
AN INTIMATE PUB IN HISTORIC MOORGATE
Our pub is surrounded by fascinating attractions for locals and tourists alike. We are within easy walking distance of the excellent Museum of London, which traces the city’s history from 450,000 BC through to present day. Gain insight into the lives of everyday Londoners through the centuries with the museum’s reconstructed interior and street scenes. We’re also close to Old Spitalfields Market, a striking Victorian market hall. Visit the antiques market on Thursdays or the independent fashion market on Fridays.
Most importantly, we are just a few minutes walk from Moorgate and Liverpool Street tube stations. As well as Underground stops, both also have national rail stations. In fact, Liverpool Street Station is one of London’s busiest commuter stations, and the surrounding area hums with commuters during the week.
