Covent Garden’s Princely Theatreland Pub

The Prince of Wales is a handsome Victorian pub on the corner of Great Queen Street and Drury Lane, a stone’s throw from Covent Garden in the heart of London’s theatreland. First established in 1850, it was rebuilt in Portland Stone in the early 20th century when the street was widened to accommodate the growing popularity of the district’s theatres, coffee houses and the grand Royal Opera House, built in 1858.

Today the Covent Garden neighbourhood is without doubt the entertainment hub of the capital. A feast of cultural delights, with the magnificent Piazza first laid out by Inigo Jones in 1631 at the centre, and almost 40 theatres radiating out across London’s West End, including the spectacular Grade I listed Theatre Royal, located a short stroll from the Prince of Wales down Drury Lane.

Stretching as far as the elegant Georgian facades of The Strand, the Covent Garden district, with its bustling market stalls, boutiques, open air cafes and street entertainers, is now a hugely popular London tourist attraction. Next door to the Prince of Wales in Great Queen Street stands one of the most imposing buildings in the area, the Grade II listed Freemasons Hall, recognised as one of the finest Art Deco buildings in England. Built in 1927 in tribute to those Freemasons who died in World War I, the site has been a Masonic meeting place since 1775. This iconic building with its richly decorated interior is open to the public, and is a regular TV and film location, featured in TV series including Spooks and Poirot.

After absorbing the sights and history of the Covent Garden district, visit The Prince of Wales for a warm welcome and a friendly pub atmosphere. You’ll find ornate engraved mirrors, comfy furniture and an extensive selection of fine wines and cask ales to enjoy. We offer an array of delicious pub staples, so whether you’re in the mood for a light bite, a shared platter or a juicy steak cooked just the way you like, you’ll relish our superb traditional pub cuisine.
