Cosy 19th-Century Pub in Bloomsbury, London

The Plough in Bloomsbury is just paces away from one of the world’s greatest museums, a celebrated university and a famous publishing house. This area of London exudes a refined, intellectual quality, which is apparent in the stunning Victorian buildings that line the streets – buildings like The Plough. You’ll find us a stone’s throw from the British Museum on a small pedestrianised road; on a sunny day you’ll see guests sitting outside and enjoying the elegant architecture of the pub’s surroundings.

Follow in the footsteps of great writers and academics in Bloomsbury, the neighbourhood where The Plough is based. We’ve been on this site since 1855, around the time when Charles Dickens lived in nearby Tavistock House. Painters in the Pre-Raphaelite movement and Virginia Woolf’s Bloomsbury Group also lived and created nearby, cementing the area’s artistic legacy. This continues today, as Bloomsbury Publishers, best known for the Harry Potter series, are situated just around the corner. Throughout its history, The Plough has welcomed many of the artists, writers and thinkers who have flocked to this corner of London.

Many of our guests come here from the nearby universities, tapping into the academic atmosphere of the neighbourhood. Meanwhile, others stop by while exploring the area. The British Museum, which opens to over six million visitors a year, is one of the capital’s best attractions. Discover its incredible exhibits, then stop by our pub to unpick your thoughts. Several of the leafy parks, world-class theatres and smaller museums that make London so special are also just a short walk away.

The pub itself is a spacious area that crosses two floors. Locals from nearby houses and offices like to visit for the wide selection of cask beers and the friendly staff. Grab a seat for some classic pub food or to watch the latest football and rugby on our HD screens. In summer, enjoy a refreshing pint or a cold glass of wine outdoors on the pedestrianised Museum Street.

Discuss Books and Art in a Literary Function Room

The academic atmosphere continues upstairs in the Bloomsbury Room, a dining area that can be booked for functions. With large windows overlooking the street below and dark wooden furniture, the light and airy space feels a little like a library. Book a formal dinner for groups of up to 40 people, perhaps before attending an event at the museum or heading to the theatre. There is no TV up here, which makes the room feel pleasingly secluded and private. As such, it’s an ideal venue for everything from birthday celebrations to business meetings. Whatever the occasion we look forward to welcoming your function to the Plough
