A tavern has existed on this site since 1632, when it was known as the King’s Arms on the village green, where maypole dancing took place each Spring, in the tiny hamlet of Knightsbridge. The Paxton’s Head is the only pub in Knightsbridge to have begun life as a village inn. Later known as the Golden Lion, the Red Lion and the Sun, by 1821, when Knightsbridge began to develop as a centre for entertainment with music halls and taverns, the inn had become the Marquis of Granby. But following the success of Prince Albert’s Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park, the pub was remodelled and renamed The Paxton’s Head in honour of Sir Joseph Paxton, the brilliant architect and gardener responsible for the Crystal Palace, the innovative glass and iron structure in which the exhibition was housed.
The current incarnation of this Grade II listed pub, designed by architect G.D. Martin between 1900 and 1902, still retains its original timber frontage, with an impressive interior of stunning cut and etched glass mirrors depicting mythical birds, flowers and traditional ‘grotesque heads’. Painted ceiling frescoes, a splendid marble fireplace, the original island servery and the mahogany décor combine to give The Paxton’s Head a warm and authentic Victorian tavern ambience.
