However, by the time of Queen Anne, the fair had developed a reputation for ‘lewdness’, with 1701 being a particularly raucous affair. Edward Shepherd, a local resident, observed a “riotous and tumultuous assembly …in which many loose, idle and disorderedly persons did rendezvous”. Queen Anne put an end to the fun temporarily, before her successor, George I, revived the May Fair to the delight of Londoners, and dismay of the locals. However, as the area had been marked for development, the May Fair’s days were numbered.
In 1735, the same Edward Shepherd, a local architect, bought the lands where the May Fair had taken place and redeveloped them into Shepherd Market. His vision was to create a village square with quaint, narrow alleyways leading onto the square, Georgian townhouses, boutique shops, a market and the New Wells Theatre. The King’s Arms, then known as The Three Jolly Butchers, occupies a central position in this charming village community area of Mayfair, a Victorian pub with Georgian roots. Due to its secluded location on Shepherd’s Market piazza, just off Berkeley Square and a haven from the bustle of Piccadilly, it has long attracted a varied clientele that includes office workers, locals, tourists and celebrities. Like all our guests, they are drawn to The Kings Arms for our menu of fresh, traditional pub food, cask ales and relaxed ambience.
