The King’s Head began life in the late 18th century as a coaching inn providing rest and refreshment for travellers heading south from the capital. However, it was the vision of esteemed Victorian architect W. M. Brutton that transformed the King’s Head into a magnificent gin palace and “one of the most exotic confections among London’s pubs”. Brutton was famous for building pubs across London in a unique and extravagant style, attracting intellectuals and artists in the 1920s including Virginia Woolfe and George Bernard Shaw. English Heritage describes The King’s Head as ‘perhaps his masterpiece and least altered interior’.
With an interior rich in brilliant cut glass, patterned tiles and wrought iron, the spectacular architecture of this Victorian gin palace has attracted much praise. CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale) have designated The King’s Head as “a pub with a nationally important historic interior” and once you step inside, it’s easy to see why. Brutton was known for his flamboyant design and The King’s Head, built in 1896, is widely considered to be his finest work. As you enter the pub, you’ll find intricately tiled corridors with florid etched glass screens, leading to various cosy drinking areas. The island bar is surrounded by checked tiles and supported by carved timber columns, and there are exquisite friezes to enjoy and details to delight everywhere you look. There is also a pleasant outdoor area where you can while away the summer evenings. It truly is a charming window into London’s Victorian past.
