An Iconic Pub in Leeds with a Glorious Past

The Griffin is a magnificent traditional pub in the heart of Leeds. During the 19th century, Leeds was one of England’s great industrial cities. Today, it’s better known as a leading financial services centre, the largest legal centre outside of London and a vibrant shopping and cultural destination. Our pub is an exceptional Victorian building with a lively modern spirit and perfectly encapsulates the intriguing blend of past and present which makes Leeds itself so fascinating.

The Griffin sits next to Leeds Station and was originally built in 1872 as a railway hotel. A fine example of gothic revival architecture, our pub is beautifully preserved and even the iconic Potts’ Clock on our façade continues to keep the city running on time, as it has done for over 100 years. There are clocks designed by Potts of Leeds on several of the city’s most celebrated buildings, including Leeds Corn Exchange. However, The Griffin’s clock is more unusual than most, as the numerals are replaced by letters spelling out the words, Griffin Hotel.

A prominent local landmark and celebrated city centre hotel for generations, our pub is also woven into the history of Leeds in some unexpected ways: in 1904, The Griffin was the venue for a pivotal meeting which led to the formation of Leeds City FC. The renowned club is now Leeds United and has changed significantly over the years, but our pub remains a perfect location for important events and inspired decision making.

The Griffin is beautifully restored and the interior filled with flawless, period detail. As you stand at our imposing bar, look down at the bar rail; it’s supported by the original feet, each shaped like a small griffin. Elegant Victorian tiling, delicately glowing globe lamps and graceful columns all add a sense of traditionalgrandeur. But, The Griffin’s atmosphere is fresh and contemporary with live music, carefully arranged big screen TVs, live sport and a fine selection of real ales, adding even greater appeal to our historic warmth and charm.

A Function Room with an Original Sense of Style

Our unusual function room is designed to reflect The Griffin’s past as an outstanding Victorian railway hotel. Named the Tunnel Room, it’s an intriguing arched space decorated with 19th century tiles and framed vintage transport art. The walls are lined with comfortable benches and intimately-sized tables, to echo the style and comfort of a traditional station waiting room. A unique venue for private parties, receptions and celebrations, the Tunnel Room is spacious enough for up to 80 guests and can be completely closed off from our usual bar area, if required. Whatever the occasion we look forward to welcoming your function to The Griffin.

An Iconic Pub in the Heart of Lively and Exciting Leeds

The Griffin was well connected in 1872 and still enjoys one of Leeds’ best locations today. Directly opposite Leeds Station and close to the city’s main shopping districts, our pub is also within easy reach of Leeds Corn Exchange. You’ll find inexpensive parking at the nearby Trinity Centre Shopping Centre, while The Griffin is equally convenient for public transport. So, whether you join us for a drink after work or a special celebration, our pub is a delightful mix of admirable tradition and modern attitude right in the centre of Leeds.
