The oak facade of the pub has been a part of the building since it was finished around 1769, while features like our ornate gold ceiling hint at the pub’s artistic past. The Golden Lion was built during the century-long construction boom beginning in the late 1600s, when Soho moved from green hunting grounds to the creative hub of London. The area became known for its theatres and music halls, which brought Bohemians and artistic types flocking to the region. Today, Soho once again has a reputation for its vibrant arts scene, as well as for excellent restaurants.
The ever-busy Golden Lion is popular with a variety of patrons who duck in from the hustle and bustle of Shaftesbury Avenue and the surrounding area. They can get away from it all in our charming, informal atmosphere. Workers from Soho’s numerous businesses join Londoners enjoying one of our cask ales or dining from our pre-theatre menu. We are situated near venues that show world-famous musicals and cutting edge drama, and just a short walk away from Covent Garden’s legendary Royal Opera House. Curious visitors to the capital find us while exploring nearby Leicester Square or wandering the streets of Chinatown.
OLDE WORLDE FUNCTION ROOM WITH PRIVATE BAR
The Golden Lion is on two floors and we love to host private events in our upstairs area. The space, suitable for groups of 20 plus seated and 35 standing, has its own bar stocked with a range of real ales and an open fire to make it even cosier in winters. Stained glass windows and dark wood panelling lend the room a warm, traditional vibe, making it a unique venue for a drinks or a dining party. Bring along a group of football fans to watch the latest in live sports, or gather your artistically minded friends for food before heading to the theatres. We also have an entertainment licence, so you can book the room for a live music event or for acoustic sets to accompany your work party. Whatever the occasion we look forward to welcoming your function to the Golden Lion.
ENJOY A RELAXED ATMOSPHERE IN AN UNBEATABLE LOCATION
Although most people think of London as somewhere that requires public transport, the Golden Lion is perfectly placed for exploring the capital on foot. We’re minutes away from the treasures of the British Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, while Covent Garden and Somerset House are just a stone’s throw from us. With many businesses nearby, we are also popular for post-work drinks. For those travelling in from the outskirts of London, perhaps to visit one of the many local theatres, you can find us between tube stations at Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus.
