The Grade II-listed pub was originally named Le Lion and is one of the oldest inns in England to have been continuously used as a pub since its establishment. At one point in the long and illustrious history of the Golden Lion, Viscount Francis Bacon, Lord Chancellor to King James I’s court owned the pub. It is believed that the pub was one of the first in the country to sell the locally brewed Star Brewery beers back when the brewery was first opened by Benjamin Wilson in 1708. The views from the windows may have changed over the years since then, but the interior remains much the same.
A traditional 15th-century charm and sense of history can be felt throughout the pub. Dark wooden furniture and doors, neutral yellow walls with hanging wall lights, and black and white photos of the area throughout the years all add to the unforgettable atmosphere of this traditional coaching inn. We have an on-site restaurant upstairs from the main bar area serving hearty pub food, a walled beer garden to the rear and several large TV screens and projectors showing the best in football, rugby and other popular sports. There is often live music at nights, attracting both locals and visitors alike.
Hire Our Private Function Room for All Occasions
The Golden Lion has a self-enclosed function room upstairs from the main bar area. The function room has an exposed brick bar and original oak beams, room for 60 seated or 100 standing guests, unrivalled views over Romford’s main square and a dancefloor complete with an iPod and laptop-compatible music system. The space is not only suited to weddings, christenings and parties, but also has facilities available for projecting presentations for business meetings and conferences.
The room can be decorated with banners and balloons to suit any occasion, and we have a long table that can be used for buffet spreads. The self-enclosed exposed wooden bar can come with a bartender who is solely responsible for functions in the room.
