Hosting regular free comedy nights, The Camden Head offers a welcoming and lively ambience, mouth-watering pub food and drink and the chance to relax after a day’s bargain-hunting.
Islington has a long history as a centre of entertainment, listing 15 inns within the manor as early as 1553. By the 18th century Islington had become a day resort for Londoners, offering tea-gardens, bowling greens and skittle gardens, a fashionable destination for Sunday strollers. Music and variety halls became popular in Islington in the 19th century, the best known of which was Collins Music Hall on Islington Green. Closed after a fire in 1958, the site is now a bookshop, but in its heyday helped to launch the careers of some famous names including Tommy Cooper, Norman Wisdom and Benny Hill.
Today, lively Islington Green is best known for its bustling cafes, bookshops and restaurants, the famous independent Screen-on-the-Green cinema, one of Britain’s oldest, and the antique and vintage shops and markets around Camden Passage, on which The Camden Head stands, a popular destination for relaxing with friends in a lively and authentic Victorian tavern.
