LIVELY PUB IN EDINBURGH’S HISTORIC GRASSMARKET

The Beehive Inn is a familiar and friendly sight in the storied Grassmarket area of Scotland’s capital, having been established in the square for over four centuries. Poets, princes and paupers alike have frequented the Beehive in the past, while today it serves as the ideal destination for everyone from discerning city locals to business visitors and sightseers. When it comes to great drinking spots in the heart of the centre, our spacious interior is rivalled only by our popular beer garden.

The Beehive began life as a coaching inn in the 16th century, before being converted into the pub we know and love today in the 1860s. Consequently, we have a drinks license that dates back more than 400 years. The inn is said to have been particularly popular with Scotland’s renowned national poet Robert Burns, who would come here to drink, write and watch cock fights. In celebration of Robbie’s preference for the Beehive, the award-winning Edinburgh Literary Pub Tour now begins in our bar.

Although the Grassmarket was once reserved for keeping livestock, and later for gruesome public hangings, today it is one of the trendiest parts of the city. The wide open square, beneath the shadow of the majestic Edinburgh Castle, is lined with historic pubs like the Beehive Inn, as well as hotels, restaurants and quirky shops. The leafy plaza is often bustling with markets offering local handicrafts and, particularly during the Fringe Festival, street performers dazzling passing tourists.

Head to the Beehive after a day exploring Edinburgh’s beautiful Old Town to enjoy a pint of 1730, our unique brew of Special Pale Ale. This is just one of the traditional British cask ales on offer here, which are accompanied by a menu of British pub classics, including wholesome steak and ale pie, hand-battered fish and chips and succulent bangers and mash. Visit in summer to while away the hours in our expansive beer garden, located behind the pub with unbeatable views of the castle.

GREAT FUNCTION ROOMS FOR BUSINESS AND PLEASURE

As The Beehive Inn is in the sightseeing centre of the city, and just around the corner from Edinburgh’s business hub, we’re perfectly placed to host functions of every kind. Head to the spacious restaurant area on the first floor, where our friendly team will be happy to host up to 100 people. With its own private bar and toilets, plus superb views of the Grassmarket below, it’s a popular spot to celebrate a wedding, birthday, work party, or just to enjoy pre-theatre dining. On the second floor, the Meeting Room – frequented by Prince Charles when he was stationed in Rosyth – has conference room-style seating and a large screen for business functions with up to 25 people. You can also book a table to watch live sports, from Premier League football to Six Nations rugby, and enjoy the witty Monkey Barrel Comedy Night every Friday. Whatever the occasion we look forward to welcoming your function to The Beehive Inn.
