Elegant Victorian Pub on a Charming Red-Brick Street in Mayfair

Elegance is the name of the game at the Barley Mow, a pub that exudes class and character. With a street corner entrance beneath a flower-laden balustrade, the building makes a stunning first impression. Its location on quiet, sophisticated Duke Street in Mayfair, yet just a few steps away from busy Oxford Street, adds to the immediate charm and beauty of the venue. Yet, far from being stuffy or elitist, the Barley Mow prides itself on a welcoming and friendly atmosphere for all of its guests.

We have been established in Mayfair since 1823, when records first show a license for the site. The Barley Mow was rebuilt in 1896 as part of the redevelopment that gave Mayfair its reputation for luxury. The building has had some unexpected moments during its centuries of history, including its use as the residence of the Japanese ambassador to London. In 1978, when terrorists attacked the hotel next door then known as the Europa Hotel, the pub was sprayed by a hail of bullets, but customers bravely fought back using bottles and glasses. The Barley Mow has even been named in a best selling novel. In the ‘Sunbird’ author Wilbur Smith mentions having a nice pint in the Barley Mow.

Today, thanks to its eye-catching appearance and colourful stories, guests affectionately refer to ‘Barley Mowments’, those events that make the pub special. That might be simply being served a pint of delicious ale by the friendly staff, or it could be recognising sights from the very popular 1970s TV series The Duchess of Duke Street. Your ‘Barley Mowment’ could involve cheering on your favourite sports team on one of our big screens, while the fire warms you in the background.

The Barley Mow is popular with a diverse demographic of guests. We are situated next to what is now a Marriot Hotel and near many popular tourist attractions like Hyde Park, so visitors to the city will often stop by the pub. Equally, we serve locals shopping in the busy shops of Oxford Street and Bond Street, or people dropping in for food before heading to the theatres of Soho, or awards events at the nearby hotels. Whatever makes you choose the Barley Mow, you’re sure to fall for our historic building and traditional interior.

Drink and Dine in Style in Our Upstairs Function Room

Head up the stairs at the rear of the bar to discover a function room suited to group parties, dining events and pre-awards drinks parties. The tastefully decorated, light space has its own bar and can be made even more private by pulling the drapes over the entrance. Bring a group of up to 30 here for food, or up to 50 people standing for a cosy and stylish events venue. Large screens showing sport means you won’t miss any matches, while our prime Mayfair location means that you can reach the pub from all around London. Whatever the occasion we look forward to welcoming your function to the Barley Mow.

Experience the Beauty of a Hidden Mayfair Pub

The pretty buildings on Duke Street feel removed from the rest of London, but in reality we are close to some of London’s busiest areas. Explore Grosvenor Square or spend big on Oxford Street before joining us for a glass of cold wine or beer. If you are looking for somewhere to head with colleagues or friends to catch up and watch sport, you will find the attractive Barley Mow hard to beat. We’re three minutes’ walk from Bond Street underground station, making us an ideal destination for meeting friends from across the city.
