Our pub is believed to date back to 1775, when it was a tavern known as the ‘Bacchanals’. You might be wondering how it later earned the unusual name ‘Bag O Nails’. According to the story, the tavern’s original entrance sign showed a satyr of the woods, as well as a group of revelling dogs called bacchanals. Many locals began referring to these bacchanals as ‘Bag O’Nails,’ a reference to a famous play by Benjamin Jonson. The satyr was often called the Devil because it was depicted on our sign with cloven feet and black colouring. The tavern was thus called ‘Devil & Bag O Nails’. You’ll see a plaque describing our pub’s history on one of its exterior walls.
Today, Bag O Nails is a beautiful Grade II listed building, with leaded light windows offering a view of the busy junction outside. Heavy red curtains, low lighting and dark wood panelling create an intimate ambiance, while our large screen TVs are perfect for viewing live sports. Our pub is a favourite of local office workers as well as tourists, so expect the ambiance to be lively, particularly around lunchtime and early evening.
DISTINCTIVE FUNCTION ROOM WITH A PRIVATE ENTRANCE
Our private upstairs function room has a separate entrance from the main pub, along with its own bar and toilets, which makes it ideal for private events. Like our downstairs bar, the function room features traditional décor, including original picture sash windows. With space for up to 40 people, this room is perfect for work events, private dinners and birthday parties alike. We are within walking distance of numerous West End Theatres, making our function room a popular choice for pre-theatre dinners. The room also features several large screen TVs, so can be easily booked for private viewings of live sports. Whatever the occasion, we look forward to welcoming your function to the Bag O Nails.
